Many people falsely assume that an artificial turf installation is an easy DIY project. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. A typical landscape professional with no artificial turf experience may not have the necessary equipment and experience to create a beautiful, time tested installation. This can create serious consequences for home owners.
What is needed for a synthetic turf installation?
The key to synthetic turf installations is the base construction. Installations north of 1,000 square feet typically require over 10 tons of aggregate material. The aggregate is disbursed, graded, and compacted and then compacted again. This process sometimes requires heavy machinery, but most times, the material is moved via wheelbarrow. Overall, this an extremely labor-intensive process, and, for the weekend warrior, this is not feasible, cost effective or very safe at all.
Without the creation of a proper base, the installation will not drain properly, which can lead to standing water, the potential for mold and mildew and other safety hazards. Not to mention – the loss of any aesthetic value! An improper installation will cost you more time and money over the long term. The turf becomes uneven, creating the potential for trip hazards and be very visually displeasing.
Make no mistake, this type of work is best left to a qualified synthetic turf specialist.
Synthetic turf is, at the end of the day, a long-term solution for you and your home. You risk paying more for an inferior installation than if you choose a specialist who will do the project the right way the first time, even if they are a little more expensive. Good design is expensive, but the cost of bad design is far worse.
